Following your review of the materials below, should you have additional questions, please contact your local Navy JAG Recruiting Officer at NavyJAGAccessions@us.navy.mil.

This is up to you. Every location will offer something different, but all internship positions will offer exposure to life in the JAGC.

Applicants are personally responsible for making and funding all travel and living arrangements. Listing preferred locations does not guarantee assignment to that location. All internship and externship opportunities are primarily determined by the operational needs and requirements of the JAGC’s at the time of selection. By submitting an application, applicants acknowledge and accept that they may be assigned to any JAGC internship location with an available internship opportunity, regardless of the preferences listed. An applicant is free to decline the opportunity should logistics for the location prove insurmountable.

Like future judge advocates, successful intern and extern candidates must be prepared to accept an assignment wherever the needs of the JAGC dictate.

No, all internships and externships are currently unfunded. We encourage applicants to also seek out scholarships or grants that may be offered by their law schools, bar associations or other public interest-related organizations, and will work any intern or extern to provide document or support materials to those organizations.

Internships are full-time positions during the summer. This 8-10 week program is an intensive opportunity to fully understand, appreciate and experience the life of a judge advocate at the Deckplate level. Internships are structured to provide exposure to both legal practice areas as well as naval officer experiences.

Externships are full or part-time positions during the academic semester. This program is limited on the structured opportunities for externs, but provides the same exposure to legal practice areas and naval officer experiences.

Both programs are eligible for academic credit, should your legal education institution permit.

Yes. Please contact the Intern/Extern Program Manager at NavyJAGAccessions@us.navy.mil if you have questions on deadlines or required documents.

There are no physical fitness or medical requirements for the internship/externship. However, physical and medical requirements are applicable for full-time employment and Active Duty service. During the course of an internship, some professional development opportunities may require disclosure of medical and physical conditions for safety concerns, such as going underway on a U.S. Navy vessel.

All intern and extern applications should be submitted via the JAG Corps Recruit Platform. Applications are only accepted during open cycles; deadlines are posted on the internship/externship page on this website.

Consult the internship/externship application for details on requirements and information needed.

Yes, you may still apply! Make sure you have included your college transcripts and, if you are a 2L, include your 1L grades. If you are a 1L just finishing your first semester of law school, include a note in the “Remarks” section of the internship application that your school won’t release grades until after the deadline.

Applied, Pending Results

Due to the extensive review afforded to all applicants, notify applicants of decisions generally occurs within 2-6 weeks of the deadline. This time frame is impacted by both the number of applicants, current operations and available bandwidth of the selection board.

All applicants will be notified via email.

No, applications are not considered until after the deadline.

Applied, Not Selected

Fall and Spring externship deadlines are posted on the internship/externship page.

Applied, Selected

If you would like to remain on the alternate list, please respond to the notification email as instructed. If opportunities become available, you will be notified by email. Typically, all available opportunities are advertised to alternates, regardless of location preferences included on your application. Decisions will be made based on the applicant's file.

The formal internship program begins the first Monday of June. Should you require or request a different start date, please ensure you submit this request to the Internship Program Manager as soon as practical. Deviations from the program start dates are granted based on exceptional circumstances.

You must be able to complete eight (8) full weeks to participate in the summer internship program. With command approval, you have the option to work up to 10 weeks.

Interns must be able to complete at least eight (8) full weeks with the Navy JAG Corps so "split summer" arrangements typically are not supported.

Please ensure you are completing all required paperwork, certificate training, and fingerprinting as instructed by email. Additional guidance or tips may be provided in an email.

The internship coordinator for your location will be a Navy judge advocate. They will provide you with any additional materials or requirements before you report on Day 1.

There are no strict pre-requisite preparation items but we encourage you to maintain an open mind and learning attitude as you go through the unique Navy JAG Corps experience!

High performing interns are eligible to apply and be considered for a full-time offer to join the Navy JAG Corps (pending medical screening and bar passage).

This pipeline considers the intern's application materials, intern evaluation, and structured interview. Decisions will be provided prior to the next accessions board, enabling non-selected interns to apply for the next accessions cycle.

Requirements for the application process will be provided to interns during the internship period, and generally comply with the standard accessions application.
